Assimilation

March 17th, 2007

Okay. After a heavenly 10-hour slumber, I am back to my senses. It feels like I’ve got the energizer bunny going on inside my guts.. Yay!

So yesterday was fun.. I got to go out with my friends and we hung out for a bit.

After the fun, of course, I’ve got to get back to my responsibilities. I’ve got a 4-page research paper draft due on Monday about assimilation. It’s a pretty neat topic for me too - considering I’m a second generation immigrant by definition. I’m still trying to pick a side.. if I’m either pro- or anti- assimilation. I mean, assimilation is good to an extent. You don’t want to be branded as a fob or odd or anything.. But since I’ve spent me pre-puberty years in the Philippines, I’m already instilled with the Filipino values and customs.

Not that these Filipino values greatly conflict with the American ways, but they’re generally more.. uhm, how can I put it.. more conservative?

Maybe I’m in the middle. I don’t know. Somehow, though, I wish I’m just left with one set of values. It’s really tough to remain a hardcore Filipino in America. And being Americanized is not a very good thing either in the Philippines. Somehow, I feel like I don’t belong anywhere. I’m just.. here. Lost without an identity of my own.
